Bannerlord does not have much replay value in the early access as it has a lack of features. However modding tools has been added to the game recently, so you can get to enjoy a whole new experience by using mods. This guide will show you how to easily install mods for Mount and Blade 2: Bannerlord.
Find the mods you want
First of all you need to find out which mods you want to add to the game. The mod has to be compatible with your current version of the game or else it won’t work. If you really want a mod you can also roll back your game’s version to an older one. Most mods will not work with the beta version installed. There is no Steam workshop integrated in the game as of yet, so you have to use certain websites where mod creators have uploaded their mods. There are currently two major sites to download mods from:
- nexusmods – The most popular mod database for Bannerlord at the moment.
- moddb – Has bigger modpacks but many of them are in development. So it’s a good place to see upcoming mods.
We also have a list of the best modpacks for Bannerlord.
Installing the mods
There are two ways to add mods to your Bannerlord game. Using Vortex mod manager or installing them manually. I recommend installing the mods manually so you don’t have to bloat your computer with software. However it’s easier to use the Vortex mod manager if you are not very good with computers.
How to install mods manually
Time needed: 5 minutes.
- Go to download page
Click on the mod so you appear at the page where you can download it. On Nexusmods you have to log in first and then click manual download.
- Download all the mod files
Each mod will have different files to download. You have to follow the directions from the mod developer to install the particular mod you want. In this particular mod the Ronin Base file is required to be installed first for it to work. There are also sometimes optional files if you want even more features in the mod. For example this mod allows you to download the “start as a ruler” file if you want to start as a ruler or start as a vassal etc… So download all the files you want. You can also see the required game version for the different downloads. (Smaller mods requires only one download)
- Open the compressed file
The downloaded file is usually a .rar file so you have to use a program like WinRAR or 7-zip to open it. Once it is opened you can see the module files.
- Move files to your Bannerlord modules folder
Now you have to move the newly downloaded mod folders into your games module folder. Just drag and drop it directly from the opened RAR file. The default location for the modules folder is C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Mount & Blade II Bannerlord\Modules. In this case you also need to move the Native folder in there to change some default settings of the game. Click accept when it asks to overwrite or replace any files. If you have any additional files like the “Start as ruler” you just have to drag and drop those files in the module folder too.
- Open the launcher
It’s now time to open up the game launcher and head into the “Mods” tab. From there you have to select the mod that you have just moved into the games modules folder.
- Click play and enjoy
The mod has now successfully been installed to your game. Click play and start up the game. Enjoy your new mod.
Install mods using Vortex mod manager
- Download the Vortex mod manager
First thing you should do is download the Vortex mod manager. It can be download from nexusmods download page. Use the version called “Vortex” and click manual download. Once it is download open the .exe file and install it.
2. Add Mount and Blade 2: Bannerlord to your Vortex games
Open the Vortex launcher and go to the “Games” tab. Then search for Bannerlord and add it as a managed game. You also have to log in to your nexusmods account through the Vortex app before you can download mods.
3. Go to mod download page
Now go to the download page of the mod you want to download. Instead of clicking manual download click the Vortex download instead. Then click download again and it will ask to download the file through the Vortex app. Click the button saying “Open Vortex”.
4. Install the mod
Open Vortex and it will ask to install the mod in the top-right corner. Click the green install button and wait for it to install. Then it will ask you to enable the mod. Click the enable button which is in the same location as the install button. The mod is now installed in your game and ready for use.
5. Open the launcher and start the game
Now you just need to select the mod in the launcher and then you are good to go. Open the launcher and head into the “Mods” tab. Then check the box next to the mod that was just installed. Now launch your game and the new mod will be ready to use.
